Joist span exceeded (IRC 2021 Table R507.6)
A 12' 0" span is over the 11' 10" limit for Southern pine 2×8 at 16 in OC. Use 2×10 at 16 in OC (max 14' 0") or 2×8 at 12 in OC (max 13' 1"). Verify with your local building department — this is not engineering advice.
Ledger fasteners are not counted. Their spacing depends on joist span and comes from a code table (IRC R507.9); follow your local code.

About This Tool

Deck Calculator – A Complete Material Takeoff for a Rectangular Deck

A deck calculator saves you from the most common deck-building mistake: a second or third trip to the lumber yard. Instead of estimating from square footage alone, this tool frames the deck the way a carpenter would. It places joists at your chosen spacing, sets a beam on posts, runs decking boards across the joists and spaces balusters between railing posts. Then it counts every piece and turns the counts into stock lengths, concrete bags and boxes of screws. The to-scale framing plan redraws as you type, so you can see what the numbers mean.

Planning a Deck Takeoff

Start with two measurements: the length along the house and the depth (how far the deck projects from the house). Joists run from the house outward, so the depth sets the joist span and the length sets how many joists you need: floor(L ÷ spacing) + 1, plus an end joist if the length isn't an exact multiple of the spacing. An attached deck hangs its joists from a ledger bolted to the house and needs one beam at the front. A freestanding deck replaces the ledger with a second beam and its own row of posts.

Decking rows are counted across the depth: rows = ⌈D ÷ (board width + gap)⌉. The last row is usually a ripped board, and the calculator tells you how wide to rip it. For each stock length it works out how many boards you need, how many seams each row gets and what share of the wood ends up as offcuts. Auto picks the length with the least lumber to buy and breaks ties in favour of longer boards, which means fewer seams.

Why Butt Joints Must Land on a Joist

Every board end needs solid bearing and its own pair of screws. A 12 ft board on joists at 16 in on centre can be used at its full 144 in, because 144 is a multiple of 16. A 14 ft board can only be used at 160 in, and the last 8 in is waste. This is why the cheapest board isn't always the one with the lowest price per foot. It's the one whose length best fits your joist spacing and deck length.

Joist Spacing vs Board Type

Decking has its own maximum span between joists. Under IRC 2021, 5/4 wood (1 1/4 in nominal) may span 16 in when laid perpendicular to the joists but only 12 in on a 45° diagonal. 2× wood may span 24 in straight and 16 in diagonal. Most composite decking follows the 16 in and 12 in limits, but always check the manufacturer's installation guide. Joist size is checked separately against the IRC deck joist span table. A 2×8 Southern pine joist at 16 in on centre spans about 11 ft 10 in. Move to 12 in spacing or a 2×10 and it spans more than 13 ft.

Tip: fix a span warning cheaply
When the joist span warning appears, compare the two fixes it suggests. A deeper joist usually costs less than 33 % more joists at tighter spacing, but tighter spacing also makes the deck feel stiffer and lets you lay diagonal decking.

Why Waste Rises for Diagonal Decking

Straight decking wastes little. Offcuts from one row start the next, and the ends are square. On a 45° diagonal, every row starts and ends with a mitred cut, and the rows near the corners are short. A 10 % allowance is typical for straight runs and 15 % for diagonal. Diagonal boards also cross each joist at an angle, so the clear span is about √2 times the joist spacing. That's why diagonal layouts need tighter joist spacing and about 40 % more screws.

Posts, Footings and Concrete

Posts are spaced evenly along each beam, no farther apart than your maximum spacing. Each post sits on a cylindrical footing, and the concrete in each one is π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth. A 12 in × 36 in footing holds about 2.36 ft³, which is four 80 lb bags. Footings must reach below the local frost line, so confirm the depth with your building department before you dig.

The 30-Inch Guard Rule and the 4-Inch Baluster Rule

Under IRC R312.1.1, any open side of a deck more than 30 in above the grade below needs a guard. Under R312.1.3, the openings in that guard must not let a 4 in sphere pass through. The calculator divides each side into equal sections between railing posts. In each section it fits the number of balusters that keeps the gap at or below your target, then reports the actual gap. Any section with a gap over 4 in is flagged, and so is any unguarded open side on a deck over 30 in high.

Stairs, ledger bolting, beam sizing, L-shaped and multi-level decks are outside the scope of this calculator. Use the Stair Calculator for steps. Ledger fastener spacing depends on joist span and comes from a code table, so take it from your local code rather than a rule of thumb.

Permits and local code come first
This calculator is a planning and purchasing aid, not engineering. Span tables, frost depths, snow loads and guard rules vary by jurisdiction and code edition. Most decks need a permit, and your building department's requirements override any number shown here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Deck Calculator free?

Yes, Deck Calculator is totally free :)

Can I use the Deck Calculator offline?

Yes, you can install the webapp as PWA.

Is it safe to use Deck Calculator?

Yes, any data related to Deck Calculator only stored in your browser (if storage required). You can simply clear browser cache to clear all the stored data. We do not store any data on server.

How does this deck calculator work?

It lays out a rectangular deck the way a framer would: joists at your chosen spacing, a beam on posts, decking rows across the joists and railing posts on the sides you pick. It then counts every piece, converts it to stock lengths and bags, and checks the layout against common IRC deck rules.

How far apart should deck joists be?

16 in on centre is the usual choice. 5/4 wood and most composite boards need 16 in or closer for straight decking and 12 in for diagonal decking; 2× wood boards can span 24 in straight. Closer spacing also lets a smaller joist span further.

Why do butt joints have to land on a joist?

Each board end needs solid bearing and two fasteners, so a joint must sit over the centre of a joist (or a doubled joist). That is why the calculator trims each stock board back to a multiple of the joist spacing before counting how many you need.

How deep should deck footings be?

Below your local frost line and on undisturbed soil. The frost depth varies from a few inches in warm climates to more than 4 ft in cold ones, so check with your building department before you dig.

What is the maximum gap between balusters?

Under the IRC a 4 in sphere must not pass through any opening in a guard, so the clear gap between balusters must be under 4 in. The calculator spaces balusters evenly in each section and flags any section where the gap would exceed that.

How much more material does diagonal decking need?

Plan on about 15 % waste for 45° decking versus about 10 % for straight runs, because every row starts and ends with an angled cut. Diagonal boards also span further between joists, so they usually need tighter joist spacing and more screws.
