Baking Unit Converter – Cups, Grams, Sticks & More
Baking is a precise science, and getting measurements right can be the difference between a perfect loaf and a dense brick. The Baking Unit Converter bridges the gap between the cup-and-teaspoon tradition common in American recipes and the gram-based metric approach preferred across much of the world. It goes beyond a standard volume converter by understanding baking-specific units — sticks of butter, pinches, dashes, smidges — and by handling ingredient-aware volume-to-weight conversions using a built-in density table.
What Units Are Supported?
The converter covers four unit groups:
- Volume (Imperial) — teaspoon, tablespoon, fluid ounce, US cup (236.59 mL), metric cup (250 mL), pint, quart, gallon.
- Volume (Metric) — milliliter, centiliter, deciliter, liter.
- Weight — gram, kilogram, ounce, pound.
- Baking-Specific — stick of butter (113.4 g), bar of chocolate (100 g), large egg (~50 g), pinch (~0.31 mL), dash (~0.62 mL), smidge (~0.15 mL).
Volume-to-Weight Conversions
When you select a volume unit as the source and a weight unit as the target (or vice versa), the tool asks you to choose an ingredient. It then looks up that ingredient's density in its built-in table and performs a two-step conversion:
- Convert the source volume to milliliters using exact factors (e.g.,
1 US cup = 236.588 mL). - Multiply by the ingredient's density to get grams (e.g.,
1 cup all-purpose flour × 0.528 g/mL = 125 g).
The density table covers more than 25 common baking ingredients including flour varieties, sugars, fats, dairy, leaveners, chocolate, oats, and more. When a result relies on a density assumption, the tool displays a note so you always know the basis of the conversion.
US Cup vs. Metric Cup
Many bakers are unaware that the US cup (236.6 mL) and the metric cup (250 mL) differ by about 5.7%. For a single teaspoon this is negligible, but for a recipe calling for 4 cups of flour it amounts to roughly 55 mL — enough to noticeably affect texture. The converter treats these as separate, selectable units so you can match the cup size your recipe intends.
Baking-Specific Units Explained
Informal recipe shorthand like a pinch of salt or a dash of vanilla has broadly accepted culinary equivalents:
- Smidge — approximately
1/32 tsp(0.154 mL), the smallest of the three. - Pinch — approximately
1/16 tsp(0.308 mL), literally what fits between two fingers. - Dash — approximately
1/8 tsp(0.616 mL), two pinches. - Stick of butter — the standard US packaging unit, equal to
½ cup,8 tablespoons, or113.4 g.

Tips for Accurate Baking Measurement
Volume-to-weight conversions for dry ingredients are approximate because the density of flour, sugar, and oats varies with packing method. For consistent results, weigh dry ingredients on a digital kitchen scale rather than scooping by cup. Liquid ingredients (milk, oil, honey) are much less sensitive to packing variability, so cup measurements are reliable for them.
When a recipe lists both a weight and a volume (e.g., "125 g / 1 cup flour"), trust the weight. It reflects the author's exact intent regardless of how you pack your measuring cup.
