US Gallon vs UK Imperial Gallon
The United States and the United Kingdom both express fuel economy in "miles per gallon," but they use different gallons. The US gallon equals 3.785 liters, while the UK Imperial gallon equals 4.546 liters — about 20% larger. Because of this, the same vehicle will always show a higher MPG figure in UK units:
- 30 mpg (US) ≈ 36.0 mpg (UK) for the same car
- 40 mpg (UK) ≈ 33.3 mpg (US) for the same car
