Why MPG and L/100km Cannot Simply Be Multiplied

Because they are reciprocals of each other, converting between them requires division, not multiplication:

L/100km = 235.215 ÷ mpg (US)

mpg (US) = 235.215 ÷ L/100km

This means a car rated at 30 mpg (US) consumes 7.84 L/100km, and a car rated at 6 L/100km achieves 39.2 mpg (US).
