What Is DPI and Why Does It Matter for Print?
DPI (dots per inch) measures how many ink dots a printer places per inch of output. In the context of preparing digital images for print, DPI is used interchangeably with PPI (pixels per inch) — the number of image pixels mapped to each inch of the printed page.
The relationship is straightforward: a 3000-pixel-wide image printed at 300 DPI produces a 10-inch-wide print. The same image printed at 150 DPI produces a 20-inch print, but with visibly lower quality. The formula is:
Print size (inches) = Pixel dimension ÷ DPI
For professional print work, 300 DPI is the standard minimum. Most photo labs, magazines, and commercial print services require at least 300 DPI for acceptable quality. Fine-art prints and high-end photography may request 600 DPI or higher.

Print Size to Required Pixels

For an 8 × 10 inch print at 300 DPI, you need at least 2400 × 3000 pixels — about 7.2 megapixels. A 24 × 36 inch poster at 300 DPI requires 7200 × 10800 pixels, or approximately 77.8 megapixels. Calculate Effective DPI
Have an image and a known print width? Enter both to find the effective DPI. For example, a 1920-pixel-wide image printed at 6.4 inches gives exactly 300 DPI. If the calculated DPI falls below 300, the tool flags it with a quality warning and suggests using a higher-resolution image or reducing the print size.
Megapixels and Aspect Ratio
Every result includes the total megapixel count (width × height ÷ 1,000,000) and the simplified aspect ratio calculated using the greatest common divisor. A 1920 × 1080 image simplifies to a 16:9 ratio; a 3000 × 2000 image gives 3:2, the classic 35mm film ratio. Knowing your aspect ratio helps you avoid unexpected cropping when printing to standard paper sizes.
Estimated File Size
The tool estimates storage requirements based on pixel dimensions, color mode, and file format:
- TIFF — reports uncompressed raw size (width × height × bytes per channel)
- PNG — estimates approximately 50% of raw (lossless compression)
- JPEG — estimates approximately 10% of raw (lossy compression at typical quality)
Bytes per pixel depend on the color mode: RGB uses 3 bytes, CMYK uses 4 bytes (common in professional print workflows), and Grayscale uses 1 byte. These are estimates — actual file sizes vary based on image content and compression settings.
