What Is a Light-Year?
A light-year (ly) is the distance that light travels through a vacuum in one Julian year (365.25 days). Based on the exact SI speed of light, c = 299,792,458 m/s, one light-year equals exactly 9,460,730,472,580,800 metres — roughly 9.461 × 10¹⁵ m or about 5.879 trillion miles. Crucially, a light-year is a unit of distance, not time, even though the word "year" appears in its name.

Light-Year vs. Parsec vs. Astronomical Unit
Three units dominate professional and popular astronomy, and they are easy to confuse:
- Astronomical Unit (AU) — the mean Earth-Sun distance (~1.496 × 10¹¹ m). It is the natural unit for distances within a solar system. Neptune orbits at ~30 AU; the Kuiper Belt extends to ~50 AU.
- Light-Year (ly) — defined physically from the speed of light. It is the most intuitive unit for popular science communication because it immediately conveys how "old" the light from a source is.
- Parsec (pc) — defined geometrically: the distance at which 1 AU subtends exactly one arc-second of parallax angle. One parsec equals approximately 3.2616 light-years. Accuracy and Limitations
All constants used in this converter are based on IAU 2012 and SI-defined values. The speed of light is c = 299,792,458 m/s exactly, and 1 AU is defined as exactly 149,597,870,700 m. JavaScript 64-bit floating-point arithmetic provides approximately 15–16 significant digits. The converter accepts values up to 10³⁰; beyond this, floating-point precision degrades below the scale of the observable universe and the input is rejected with an error message.
