About This Tool

Days in Month Calculator – Never Miscount a Month Again

Not every month has the same number of days, and February's length depends entirely on whether the year is a leap year. The Days in Month Calculator removes the guesswork by instantly returning the exact day count for any month and year, correctly applying leap-year rules along the way. Whether you are setting up a billing cycle, planning a shift schedule, or just double checking how many days are left before a deadline, this tool gives an exact answer in a single click.

How Month Lengths Work

Most months always have the same length: 30 or 31 days, following the familiar rhyme "30 days hath September, April, June, and November." February is the exception — it has 28 days in a common year and 29 days in a leap year. The calculator applies this automatically, so you never have to remember the rule yourself.

The Leap Year Rule

Under the modern Gregorian calendar, a year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4. Century years (divisible by 100) are the exception to that rule — they are only leap years if they are also divisible by 400. That is why 2024 and 2028 are leap years, while 1900 was not, but 2000 was. For historical dates, the tool also offers the simpler Julian calendar rule, which treats every year divisible by 4 as a leap year with no century exception.

What the Calculator Shows

Beyond the raw day count, the single-month lookup includes the leap year status, the weekday the month starts and ends on, how many calendar weeks the month spans, an estimated business-day count, and a mini calendar grid so you can see the layout at a glance. If you would rather start from a full date, entering one automatically derives the corresponding month and year.

Full Year and Comparison Modes

Switch to the full-year view to see a table listing every month's day count for a chosen year, plus the yearly total of 365 or 366 days — handy for payroll calendars, academic planning, or software testing that needs a complete reference table. You can also export this table as a CSV file for use in spreadsheets. The comparison mode lets you place the same month from two different years side by side, which is the fastest way to see exactly how a leap year shifts February's length by a single day.

Common Use Cases

This calculator is useful well beyond casual curiosity. Payroll and billing teams use it to prorate monthly charges accurately. Project managers and shift planners use it to schedule work across months of different lengths. Developers use it to validate date-range logic in software, and students and teachers use it for academic calendar planning. Anyone who has ever paused to count on their knuckles to remember whether a month has 30 or 31 days will find this a faster, more reliable alternative.

Historical accuracy note
The Gregorian calendar was only adopted starting in October 1582. Calculations for years before that are shown for reference using the modern rule unless the Julian calendar option is selected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Days in Month Calculator free?

Yes, Days in Month Calculator is totally free :)

Can I use the Days in Month Calculator offline?

Yes, you can install the webapp as PWA.

Is it safe to use Days in Month Calculator?

Yes, any data related to Days in Month Calculator only stored in your browser (if storage required). You can simply clear browser cache to clear all the stored data. We do not store any data on server.

How does the Days in Month Calculator work?

Pick a month and year and the tool returns the exact number of days in that month, applying the Gregorian leap-year rule to February automatically. You can also enter a full date and the month/year will be filled in for you.

How many days does February have?

February has 28 days in a common year and 29 days in a leap year. A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400 — so 2024 and 2028 have 29 days, but 2026 and 2100 have 28.

Can I see the day counts for every month of a year at once?

Yes. Switch on the full-year view to get a table listing every month's day count for the selected year, along with the yearly total (365 or 366 days).

What's the difference between the Gregorian and Julian calendar options?

Gregorian is the modern calendar used almost everywhere today. Julian is the older calendar that determines leap years by simple divisibility by 4, with no century exception. The choice only changes February's day count (28 vs. 29) in edge-case century years like 1900 or 2100.

Can I compare the same month across two different years?

Yes. The comparison mode shows the day count for a chosen month in two different years side by side, which is especially useful for spotting the one-day difference that leap years add to February.

How accurate are the results?

The results are exact for any year from 1 to 9999 under the selected calendar system, since month lengths and leap-year rules are fixed, well-defined formulas with no ambiguity.
