Holiday Countdown Calculator – How Many Days Until the Holidays?
Whether you're counting down to Christmas morning, planning a Diwali celebration, or just wondering how many days are left until your next long weekend, the Holiday Countdown Calculator turns any holiday — or any custom date you choose — into a live, continuously updating countdown broken down into days, hours, minutes, and seconds.
Preset Holidays and Custom Dates
Pick from a curated list of over 20 global and regional holidays, including New Year's Day, Valentine's Day, Easter Sunday, Cinco de Mayo, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Diwali, Lunar New Year, Eid al-Fitr, Hanukkah, and Christmas. Filter the list by Region to quickly find holidays relevant to you, or switch to Custom Date to count down to a birthday, anniversary, deadline, vacation, or product launch instead. Adding a specific time (rather than the default midnight) is optional but useful when the moment itself matters, like a party start time.
How Movable Holidays Are Calculated
Fixed-date holidays like Christmas (Dec 25) and Halloween (Oct 31) never change, and nth-weekday holidays like Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday of November) are computed with calendar math. Movable feasts are trickier: Easter Sunday and Good Friday are calculated with the Computus algorithm — the classic method for finding the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon following the spring equinox. Holidays set by lunar or lunisolar calendars — Diwali, Lunar New Year, Eid al-Fitr, and Hanukkah — instead use a published lookup table of festival dates, since converting a lunar calendar to the Gregorian calendar on the fly requires astronomical data well beyond simple arithmetic.
Automatic Year Rollover
If a holiday's date has already passed for the current year, the calculator automatically rolls the countdown forward to next year's occurrence — so checking on Christmas Day itself smoothly shows the countdown to next Christmas instead of a confusing negative number. The tool also reports how many days have elapsed since the last occurrence and shows a progress bar for how far through the full cycle (last occurrence to next occurrence) you currently are.
Comparing Multiple Holidays
Add several holidays to the comparison list and the calculator ranks them by proximity, soonest first, so you can see at a glance whether Halloween or Thanksgiving is coming up next. This is useful for retail planning, content calendars, or simply deciding which celebration to prepare for first.
Time Zones and Accuracy
The countdown is calculated against the time zone you select, which defaults to your browser's local time zone, using the standard IANA time zone database so daylight saving transitions are handled correctly. Because the countdown relies on your device's clock, keep your computer's date and time settings accurate for the most reliable results. Use Copy to grab a text summary or Download to save it as a .txtfile — every input recalculates instantly, so there's no need to press a button just to see updated numbers.
