Knowing exactly when the next public holiday lands is useful for a lot more than daydreaming about a long weekend. HR teams need it for payroll and shift schedules, travelers use it to time trips around a paid day off, and businesses rely on it to plan staffing, shipping cutoffs, and customer communications. The Next Public Holiday Finderanswers the question "how many days until the next day off?" for a selected country and, where supported, a specific region, starting from today or any custom reference date you choose.
How the Countdown Is Calculated
Every supported holiday is defined as a rule, not a hardcoded date, so the calculator stays accurate for any year without manual updates. Fixed-date holidays (like January 1for New Year's Day) are stored directly. Holidays that move within a month, such as "the fourth Thursday of November" for US Thanksgiving or "the last Monday of May" for the UK's Spring Bank Holiday, use an nth-weekday-of-month rule. Easter-based holidays — Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, and Whit Monday — are computed with the Computus algorithm, the standard method for finding Easter Sunday in the Gregorian calendar, so they resolve correctly decades into the future.
Once the tool has every holiday date for the relevant years, it filters out anything before your reference date, sorts the rest chronologically, and reports the closest one as the "next holiday." Days remaining is calculated as a calendar-day difference between date-only values, which avoids the time-zone drift that can throw off countdowns done with full timestamps.
Observed-Date Adjustments
Several countries shift a holiday's day off when the calendar date falls on a weekend. The tool models this with country-specific observed-date rules: in the United States, a Saturday holiday is typically observed the preceding Friday and a Sunday holiday the following Monday, while the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia move weekend holidays to the next Monday. Germany, France, and India don't apply a weekend shift, so their holidays are shown without an observed-date adjustment. A toggle lets you choose whether the countdown targets the calendar date or the observed date.
Three Ways to Use the Results
The Next Holiday tab shows a single countdown card with the holiday name, calendar date, weekday, and the number of calendar days, weeks, and business days remaining. The Upcoming List tab lists the next one to twenty holidays in chronological order, which is handy for building a quarterly staffing or shipping calendar. The Date Range tab lets you search for every holiday between the reference date and any end date up to five years out — useful for auditing an entire fiscal year at once.
Filtering and Sharing Results
Use the holiday-type filter to narrow results down to public, bank, optional, or observance holidays only. Once you have the view you want, copy the summary to your clipboard, download it as a text file, or generate a shareable link that pre-fills your country, region, reference date, and other settings for anyone who opens it — your last-used country and region are also remembered locally in your browser for next time.
