Knowing exactly which season a date falls into is more useful than it first sounds. Event planners need it to time outdoor gatherings, farmers use it to plan planting and harvest windows, retailers build merchandising calendars around it, and schools align academic terms with it. Meteorological vs. astronomical seasons
The tool supports two widely used season-definition systems. Meteorological seasons split the year into four fixed three-month blocks — in the Northern Hemisphere, Winter is always December through February, Spring is March through May, Summer is June through August, and Autumn is September through November. Climatologists prefer this system because it keeps statistical records (like monthly temperature averages) consistent from year to year. Astronomical seasons, on the other hand, are anchored to the exact solstice and equinox instants — the moments when Earth's axial tilt relative to the sun produces the year's extremes and midpoints of day length. Because Earth's orbit isn't a perfectly repeating 365-day cycle, these instants drift by roughly a day or two from year to year.
How the astronomical dates are calculated
The calculator computes the March equinox, June solstice, September equinox, and December solstice using Jean Meeus's solar position algorithm, a well-established method from Astronomical Algorithms that combines a mean-event formula with a set of periodic correction terms. The result is accurate to within a couple of minutes for any year between 1900 and 2100 — more than precise enough to know exactly which day a season begins.
Why hemispheres are always inverted
Earth's axis is tilted about 23.44° relative to its orbital plane. As Earth travels around the sun, first the Northern Hemisphere leans toward it and then, six months later, the Southern Hemisphere does. That means the two hemispheres are always experiencing opposite seasons: when it's Winter in Canada, it's Summer in Argentina, at the exact same moment. The calculator's hemisphere toggle simply relabels the same set of boundary dates — Winter becomes Summer, Spring becomes Autumn, and vice versa.
Full-year season calendar
The Full Year Calendar mode generates the start and end date of all four seasons for any year you choose, so you can see the entire yearly cycle at a glance — useful for building a planting schedule, a retail promotions calendar, or a travel itinerary that spans several seasons. When astronomical mode is selected, the exact UTC time of each equinox and solstice is shown alongside the date.
Reading the results
A single lookup reports the current season, its start and end dates, how many days have elapsed since it began, how many days remainuntil the next season, and a progress bar showing what percentage of the season has passed. This makes it easy to answer questions like "how much longer until Spring?" without doing any date arithmetic yourself.
Accuracy and limitations
Meteorological boundaries are exact by definition since they always fall on the first of March, June, September, and December. Astronomical boundaries are computed rather than looked up from a table, so results are limited to the 1900–2100 range where the underlying algorithm is verified to be highly accurate.
