The Area Formula
Every kite's diagonals intersect at a right angle, which makes its area formula remarkably simple — the same elegant relationship used for rhombuses:
A = (p × q) / 2
where p and q are the lengths of the two diagonals. There is no need to know any angles or side lengths; the diagonals alone fully determine the area.
Why the Formula Works
A kite's diagonals split the shape into four right triangles. Because the diagonals are perpendicular, each pair of triangles shares a base along one diagonal and a height equal to a segment of the other diagonal. Summing the areas of all four triangles algebraically reduces to exactly half the product of the full diagonal lengths — hence A = (p × q) / 2. This is the same underlying geometric reasoning used for the area of a rhombus, since a rhombus is simply a special case of a kite where all four sides are equal.
Worked Example
Suppose a kite has a longer diagonal p = 10 cm and a shorter diagonal q = 6 cm. Applying the formula:
A = (10 × 6) / 2 = 60 / 2 = 30 cm²
The area of this kite is 30 square centimeters. Try a second example in meters: a kite-shaped garden bed with diagonals p = 4 m and q = 3 m has an area of (4 × 3) / 2 = 6 m² — useful for estimating mulch, soil, or paving material.

Kite vs. Rhombus vs. Other Quadrilaterals
A kite is defined by having two distinct pairs of adjacent equal sides, while a rhombus has all four sides equal. Every rhombus is technically a kite, but not every kite is a rhombus. Both shapes share the perpendicular-diagonal property, which is why they use the identical A = (p × q) / 2 formula. A general quadrilateral without perpendicular diagonals requires a different approach, such as the shoelace formula or splitting the shape into triangles.
