The Trapezoid Area Formula
The area of a trapezoid is given by:
A = ½ × (a + b) × h
Where:
- a — length of the first parallel side (Base 1)
- b — length of the second parallel side (Base 2)
- h — the perpendicular height between the two bases
It does not matter which base is longer; the formula works for any trapezoid regardless of orientation. The height h is the shortest distance between the two parallel sides, measured at a right angle — not along the slanted leg.

When all four side lengths are available — both bases (a, b) and both legs (c, d) — the perimeter is simply:

Angle-Based Height Derivation
In practical situations such as surveying or construction, the perpendicular height may not be directly measurable. If you know the length of one leg (c) and the interior angle at Base 1 (α), the calculator derives the height using trigonometry:
h = c × sin(α)

Special Cases: Isosceles and Right Trapezoids
When both legs are equal (c = d), the shape is an isosceles trapezoid. The tool detects this and labels the result accordingly. An isosceles trapezoid has the additional property that the base angles are equal, and the diagonals have the same length.
A right trapezoid has one leg perpendicular to the bases, making one interior angle exactly 90°. In this case the perpendicular leg itself equals the height, so you can enter it directly in the height field.
When both bases are equal, the shape becomes a parallelogram. The calculator displays a note in this case. The area formula still produces the correct result (A = base × height), but the shape is technically not a trapezoid.
