How the Generator Works
Set any combination of filters — Gender (Boy, Girl, or Unisex), Origin/Culture (English, Spanish, French, Indian, Arabic, Japanese, African, Nordic, Irish, Italian, Greek, Hebrew, Slavic, or Chinese), Starting Letter, Name Length, and Popularity Trend — then click Generate. The tool runs a Fisher–Yates shuffle across every name that matches your filters, so each qualifying name has an equal chance of appearing and no name repeats within a single batch. Name length is bucketed consistently across all cultures: Short is 4 letters or fewer, Medium is 5–7 letters, and Long is 8 or more.
Meanings, Origins, and Popularity Tiers
Turn on Show Meaning & Origin to display each name's etymology and cultural background alongside the result — useful for parents who want a name that carries a specific meaning, or writers grounding a character in a particular heritage. The Popularity Trend filter buckets names into three tiers: Classic names that have stayed popular for generations, Trending names commonly heard among recent births, and Rare names that are distinctive and less commonly used.
Middle Names and Sibling Matching
Enable Include Middle Name to pair every generated first name with a second, gender-compatible name from the dataset, producing a complete first-and-middle suggestion like "Elijah James" or "Amelia Rose." If you already have one child's name picked and want a sibling with a similar feel, use Sibling Name Match: the tool first looks for names sharing the same cultural origin as the one you entered, falls back to names with a similar length category if no origin match exists, and finally samples randomly if neither condition is met.
Shortlisting and Exporting
Click the heart icon on any result to add it to your Shortlist — a running collection of favorites that persists in your browser's local storage between visits, so you can keep narrowing down candidates over several sessions without losing earlier picks. Use the Exclude Names field to keep previously rejected names out of future batches entirely.
