About This Tool

Random Character Name Generator – Instant Names for Any Genre

Naming a character is one of the most common blank-page moments in creative work. Whether you're prepping NPCs for a Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder session, populating a novel's cast list, sketching a space-opera roster, or filling out a historical drama, a good name needs to sound right for its setting without accidentally colliding with an existing character. The Random Character Name Generator solves that problem by combining curated naming data with lightweight syllable-chain assembly to produce culturally and genre-appropriate names in seconds.

How the Generator Works

Pick a Genre / Origin — Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Modern, Medieval, Greek Mythology, Norse Mythology, Egyptian Mythology, Cyberpunk, or Any to mix them all — and choose a Gender preference. Modern and Medieval names are drawn straight from realistic first-name and surname banks, while the remaining genres assemble a name from prefix, middle, and suffix fragments, so the pool of possible results is effectively unlimited while staying phonetically plausible. Every generated batch is checked for duplicates, so you never see the same name twice in one run.

Fantasy Species and Name Length

When Fantasy is selected, a Species / Race option appears — Human, Elf, Dwarf, Orc, or Halfling — each drawing from its own dedicated syllable bank, so an Elf reads like Thalendir and a Dwarf reads like Grimdunn. The Name Length control (Short, Medium, or Long) adjusts how many fragments are chained together, letting you dial in punchier or more elaborate results.

Surnames, Titles, and Epithets

Turn on Include Surname to append a genre-matched last name — a Sci-Fi character might get Vantrix, while a Medieval one gets of Ashford. Turn on Include Title / Epithet to add a flavorful tag like the Bold or of the Outer Rim, giving the character extra personality without any manual writing.

This tool is not connected to any copyrighted work or existing franchise. Always double-check a generated name against your genre and setting before committing to it for published or commercial work.

Filtering and Exporting Results

The Starting Letter filter constrains the first name to a chosen initial, e.g. K, and falls back to the full name pool with a notice if no match is possible. The Exclude List accepts comma- or newline-separated entries (e.g. Aria, Kael) so any name containing those terms is filtered out automatically — handy for avoiding names already used elsewhere in your story or campaign. Star any result to add it to your Favorites list, saved to your browser's local storage so your shortlist survives between visits. Copy an individual name, reroll just one card for a fresh option without regenerating the whole batch, or use Copy All to grab the entire list. Export your batch as a .txt file for quick reading or a .csv file to compare first name, surname, genre, and gender in a spreadsheet.

Tips for Choosing a Final Name

A generated name is a starting point, not a final decision. Read it aloud and picture it on a character sheet or book cover — a strong name should be easy to pronounce and hint at the character's world without being a tongue-twister. Mix and match: generate a first name from one batch and a surname from another, or swap the species on a Fantasy name until the combination feels right. There's no limit to how many times you can click Generate, so keep rolling until one clicks.

Whether you need a stoic Norse warrior, a neon-lit cyberpunk fixer, or a down-to-earth modern protagonist, the Random Character Name Generator gives you an unlimited source of fresh names to browse until you find the perfect fit for your story, campaign, or game.

How does the Random Character Name Generator work?

Pick a genre, gender, and (optionally) a species, then click Generate. Modern and Medieval names are drawn from curated first-name and surname lists, while Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Cyberpunk, and the mythological genres assemble names from prefix, middle, and suffix fragments — a lightweight syllable-chain technique that keeps results varied and pronounceable.

What genres and species are supported?

Genres include Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Modern, Medieval, Greek Mythology, Norse Mythology, Egyptian Mythology, and Cyberpunk, plus an 'Any' option that mixes them all. When Fantasy is selected, you can also pick a species influence — Human, Elf, Dwarf, Orc, or Halfling — each with its own dedicated name style.

What do Include Surname and Include Title/Epithet add?

Include Surname appends a genre-appropriate last name (e.g. 'Moonshadow' for an Elf, 'of Ashford' for Medieval). Include Title/Epithet appends a flavorful tag such as 'the Bold' or 'of the Outer Rim' to give the character more personality at a glance.

What happens if the Starting Letter filter has no matches?

If your chosen starting letter has no matching names for the selected genre and species, the tool falls back to the full name pool for that entry and flags the batch with a notice, so generation never fails silently.

Can I avoid names I've already used in my story or campaign?

Yes. Add names to the Exclude List (comma- or newline-separated, up to 100 entries) and any generated name containing those terms will be skipped automatically. Every batch is also checked for internal duplicates.

Can I save or export the names I generate?

Yes. Star any name to add it to your Favorites list, which is saved in your browser's local storage so it persists between visits. You can also copy individual names or the whole batch, and export your results as a TXT or CSV file.
