About This Tool

Random City Generator – Discover World Cities Instantly

The Random City Generator pulls real-world cities from a curated dataset spanning every inhabited continent, giving you instant inspiration for creative writing, geography quizzes, travel planning, or placeholder location data for testing forms and databases. Each generated city comes with its country, continent, and an approximate population figure, so you get useful context alongside every result — not just a bare name.

Single City or Batch Generation

Set Number of Cities to 1 for a quick "surprise me" pick, or raise it up to 50 to build a shortlist of destinations, a bank of quiz questions, or a batch of sample location records. By default each batch contains unique cities; turn on Allow Duplicates if you want independent random draws where the same city can appear more than once.

Filter by Continent, Country, or Population

Narrow the random pool with the Continent Filter to stay within a single region — useful for regional trivia or focused travel brainstorming — or the Country Filter to draw only from cities within one nation, ideal for domestic trip planning or country-specific study material. The Minimum Population field biases results toward well-known major cities and megacities by excluding anything below your chosen threshold, e.g. setting it to 5,000,000 keeps only global cities like Tokyo, Mumbai, or São Paulo in the eligible pool.

Capitals Only and Exclusion Lists

Flip on Capitals Only to restrict output to national capital cities specifically, handy for capital-focused geography lessons. If you have already used certain cities and want fresh results, list them in the Exclude Cities field as a comma-separated list, e.g. Paris, London — matching is case-insensitive and ignores extra whitespace.

Sorting and Reproducible Results

Choose how the generated list is sorted with the Sort Output control: keep the order cities were drawn in, sort alphabetically for easy scanning, or sort by population to see the largest cities first. If you need the exact same batch again later — for a repeatable classroom exercise or a shareable test fixture — enter a numeric value in the Reproducible Seed field before generating. The same seed, filters, and batch size will always return the same cities.

Copy, Export, and Reuse Results

Copy the full generated list to your clipboard in one click, or download it as a Plain Text, CSV, or JSON file. Each export includes the city name, country, continent, population, and capital status, ready to drop into a spreadsheet, quiz bank, or seed script for application testing.

Approximate data, for inspiration and testing
Population figures are rounded, illustrative approximations rather than live census data, and the dataset reflects a curated selection of notable cities rather than every city on Earth. Use the generator for brainstorming, education, and mock data — not as an authoritative demographic or geographic reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Random City Generator free?

Yes, Random City Generator is totally free :)

Can I use the Random City Generator offline?

Yes, you can install the webapp as PWA.

Is it safe to use Random City Generator?

Yes, any data related to Random City Generator only stored in your browser (if storage required). You can simply clear browser cache to clear all the stored data. We do not store any data on server.

How does this random city generator work?

It draws from a curated dataset of real-world cities — each with a country, continent, and approximate population — and randomly selects the number of cities you request. Any continent, country, population, or capitals-only filters you set are applied before the random selection is made.

Can I generate cities from a specific continent or country?

Yes. Use the Continent filter to restrict results to a region like Europe or South America, and the Country filter to narrow further to a single country. Leave either blank to draw from the full dataset.

What does the Minimum Population filter do?

It excludes any city below the population threshold you set, which is useful for generating well-known major cities and megacities instead of smaller or lesser-known towns.

Can the same city appear twice in one batch?

Only if you turn on Allow Duplicates. By default, each generated batch contains unique cities. If your filters return fewer cities than you requested and duplicates are off, the batch is capped at the maximum available and a notice is shown.

How do I get the same batch of cities again later?

Enter a numeric seed before generating. The same seed together with the same filters and batch size will always reproduce the same list, which is handy for consistent quiz banks or test fixtures.

Can I export the generated cities?

Yes. Copy the full list to your clipboard, or download it as a plain text, CSV, or JSON file that includes each city's country, continent, population, and capital status.
