Random Excuse Generator – A Believable (or Absurd) Excuse in One Click
Sometimes you just need the right words, fast. The Random Excuse Generator instantly pulls a ready-to-use excuse from a curated bank so you never have to stare at a blank text box wondering what to say. Pick a situation, choose a tone, hit Generate, and get an excuse that fits the moment — whether you actually need one or just want a laugh.
Built for Every Situation
Not every excuse fits every scenario. That's why the bank is organized by situation — Work, School, Social Event, Gym/Fitness, Family, or Date — and by tone— Believable, Funny, Absurd, or Sarcastic. Choose "Work" and "Believable" when you actually need to message your manager, or "Social Event" and "Absurd" when you just want to make a friend laugh in the group chat.
Filter by Keyword
Looking for something specific? Type a word into the Keyword Filter — like traffic or sick — and the pool narrows to only excuses containing that theme. If nothing matches, the tool shows a friendly message instead of leaving you with an empty screen.
Make It Personal
Some templates include a placeholder for a pet or an object, like "My {pet} ate my badge...". Type a detail into the Custom Detail field — for example dog Max — and it gets woven directly into the excuse. Leave it blank and the generator fills in a random, equally plausible detail on its own.
Batch Mode for Writers and Party Hosts
Set Number of Excuses to generate up to 10 at once, then copy the whole batch or export it as a TXT or CSVfile. It's a quick source of writing prompts for comedians and content creators, or a stack of conversation starters for a party game night.
How the Randomization Works
The generator filters the excuse bank down to your selected situation, tone, and keyword, then performs a Fisher–Yates shuffle to draw results without bias — no single excuse is more likely to appear than another. Draws use the browser's crypto.getRandomValues() API for genuinely unpredictable results.
Why We Make Excuses
Excuse-making is a deeply human habit. Psychologists describe it as a way of managing self-image when things don't go as planned — specific, mildly inconvenient excuses (a flat tire, a headache) tend to feel more credible than vague ones ("something came up"). This tool leans into that pattern for entertainment: it won't write your apology emails for you, but it will give you a starting point, a laugh, or an icebreaker for an awkward silence.
Everything Stays on Your Device
This tool runs entirely in your browser — no excuse, keyword, or custom detail is ever sent to a server. Your last-used situation, tone, and generation count are remembered locally so the tool feels tailored the next time you open it, and nothing you type leaves your device.
Common Use Cases
Students use it to brainstorm (fictional) reasons for a late assignment discussion, remote workers pull a quick laugh for a Slack channel, and comedians and teachers use the batch mode as a writing-prompt generator. Party hosts use the Absurd tone as an icebreaker game — read one aloud and see who can keep a straight face. However you use it, the generator turns "I don't know what to say" into an instant option.
