NATO Phonetic Alphabet Converter – Spell Anything Out Loud
The NATO Phonetic Alphabet Converter turns ordinary text into the ICAO spelling alphabet — Alfa Bravo Charlie — and turns those code words back into plain text again. It exists because the human ear is unreliable on a noisy channel. Over a radio, a phone line or a crowded room, M and N sound almost identical, and so do S and F, or B, D, P and T. Replacing each letter with a whole word that shares no rhythm or vowel with any other word removes the ambiguity completely.
Who uses a spelling alphabet
Pilots and air traffic controllers use it for call signs, runways and squawk codes. Ships, coastguards and amateur radio operators use it for positions and licence numbers. Call-centre agents, hotel receptionists, bank staff and IT support desks use it every day for order references, postcodes, email addresses and Wi-Fi passwords, usually without knowing that the words they half-remember come from an international standard ratified in 1956. Anyone who has ever said “B for Bravo” on a support call is already using it.
How the conversion works
Every character of your input is looked up in the alphabet you selected. Letters become code words, digits follow the digit style you choose, punctuation becomes a spoken name such as Stop or Dash, and a space becomes a visible marker so the word boundaries survive the trip. Accented characters are folded first, so é is looked up as E and comes back as Echo. Decoding runs the same table backwards, tolerating any capitalisation and any separator you happen to have pasted.

Why Alfa, Juliett, Tree and Niner look misspelled
None of it is a typo. Alfa drops the ph because that digraph is not read as an f in many languages. Juliett gains a second t so a French speaker does not leave the final consonant silent. The digits are reshaped for the same reason: three becomes Tree because the th sound barely exists outside English, five becomes Fife so it is never heard as fire, and nine becomes Niner so a single clipped syllable cannot be mistaken for the German nein.
Choosing the right standard
ICAO is the international default, but it is not the only table in service. American police and fire dispatchers usually run the LAPD/APCO alphabet — Adam, Boy, Charles. Older clerical and banking staff in North America may still reach for Western Union city names. Second World War documents and veterans use the Able Baker alphabet the US Army adopted in 1941. German offices historically used DIN 5009, which additionally spells the umlauts and the sharp s natively. Decoding a message you received
Switch the direction to Phonetic → Text and paste what you heard. The decoder is deliberately forgiving: it accepts Alpha for Alfa, Juliet for Juliett and Xray for X-ray, works in any case, and splits on spaces, commas, hyphens or new lines. A token it genuinely cannot match is listed by name rather than quietly discarded, so a single mis-heard word never corrupts the rest of the reference.
Reading it out and learning it
The output panel doubles as a script. Each code word is also rendered as a chip you can tap to dim as you speak it, which stops you losing your place halfway through a long serial number, and the built-in speech playback reads the whole string aloud at an adjustable rate so you can rehearse or simply let the browser do the talking. The reference chart shows every letter with its official pronunciation and its Morse equivalent, and the drill card prompts random characters with a running score for anyone memorising the set before an exam or a radio licence test.
